Debt
Settlement – Proceed with Caution
As you may know, the process of debt settlement has
grown in popularity a great deal in recent years due to the
fact that many individuals find themselves in debt and feel
there’s no other choice - other than to file for bankruptcy.
Obviously, if you can avoid a bankruptcy filing by
alternatively opting for debt settlement, and you qualify
for a debt settlement program, you’ll likely choose this
route instead.
If you believe that debt settlement is your best
option, it’s important to be very cautious prior to
proceeding down this path. Remember, your debt is going
absolutely nowhere, therefore, you have plenty of time to
think this through and make the proper decision regarding
your debt settlement choices.
Some people consider attempting to negotiate
settlements with their creditors on their own, negating the
need to hire a debt settlement professional. Oftentimes,
however, these same individuals throw in the towel halfway
through the process due to the frustration that comes with
debt settlement, and find themselves back at square one
seeking out the assistance of a debt settlement firm. This
is where debt settlement can get tricky.
You see, there are quite a few debt settlement
companies advertising on the Internet and it’s difficult to
separate the ethical firms from those that are involved in
unethical business practices. You’ll want to proceed with
extreme caution if the debt settlement company you’re
considering:
-
Is not a member of
the Better Business Bureau, or has any complaints filed
against it through the Better Business
Bureau.
-
Takes its fees up
front, and charges its clients based on the overall amount
of debt, as opposed to a percentage of the actual amount of
money saved through settlement.
-
Uses “pushy” or
coercive techniques to make the “sale” and get you to agree
to retain their services without giving you the opportunity
to take some time to make your final
decision.
These are all signs that you’ll want to look for and
absolutely avoid any company that operates using these
practices.
In the end, what’s most important is that you
successfully eliminate your debt through the use of a
reputable and ethical debt settlement firm that you can
trust and feel extremely comfortable hiring. For more
